White Bread
At the centerpiece of this multi-layered play is Abbie Coxin, a British maid who works for ‘The Lady of the Fame and Fortune’ (Madonna) on an island surrounded by sharks. Abbie is in relentless pursuit and imitation of the Lady’s success, pills and all. Meanwhile, Madonna’s aging body and inevitable mortality parallels the dystopian reality of what we have come to know as the disillusionary American Dream. Mirroring the histrionics and outrageousness of the Abbie/Madonna pair is the implied history of white bread – a relative lyrecent invention of the foodindustry, which is emblematic of the unsustainability of our contemporary way of life.
White Bread comments on a post 9/11 dystopian world, capitalism, the simulacrum of celebrity, the culture of addiction, and the relationship between industrialization and the evolution of white (Wonderbread!)
White Bread is written and performed by Mia van Leeuwen, who uses collage as her principal dramaturgy. Sources include Jean Genet’s The Maids, Don DeLillo’s Cosmopolis, lyrics from songs by Madonna and WhiteBread: A Social History of the Store – Bought Loaf by Aaron Bobrow – Strain.
Piet Defraeye, professor of Theatre Studies at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada directs the production. Bashir Lazhar, an earlier production of his, travelled throughout Europe and Canada in 2009/10.

Weißes Brot
White Bread (Weißbrot), die relativ neue Erfindung der Lebensmittelindustrie, steht für Kulturlosigkeit, blinden Konsum und Mainstream. Im Mittelpunkt dieses vielschichtigen Stücks steht Abbie Coxin, ein britisches Dienstmädchen, das für ‚The Lady of the Fame and Fortune’ (Madonna) auf einer von Haien umgebenen Insel arbeitet. Abbie imitiert das Leben und den Erfolg des Popstars. Der körperliche Alterungs- und Verfallsprozess sowie die unvermeidliche Sterblichkeit Madonnas stehen für die Desillusionierung des Traums vom „American Way of Life“. Die Darstellung der Verkörperung Madonnas in der Figur von Abbie kreist thematisch um unsere Welt nach 9/11, kritisiert Kapitalismus und Industrialisierung mit ihren negativen Folgen für die Menschheit.
Mia van Leeuwen, Autorin und Darstellerin von Weißes Brot, bedient sich der Collage als dramaturgisches Prinzip. Sie verarbeitet dabei unterschiedlichste Quellen wie: Jean Genets Die Zofen, Don DeLillos Roman Cosmopolis, Texten und Liedern von Madonna und White Bread: A Social History of the Store-Bought Loaf von Aaron Bobrow-Strain.
Piet Defraeye, Professor für Theaterwissenschaft am Department of Drama der Universität Alberta in Edmonton, führte bei White Bread Regie. Eine seiner früheren Inszenierungen – Bashir Lazhar der frankokanadischen Autorin Evenlyne de la Chenelière (2009/10) – gastierte bereits auf der Studiobühne twm und in vielen europäischen und kanadischen Städten.
