The rich old miser Pantaloon sends the perpetual famished Arlecchino to buy a magic potion from the alchemist Benvoglio. It is a powerful elixir that makes anyone who drinks it fall in love with the first person he sees. Pantaloon's daughter Carabella is in love with Benvoglio, who in turn fancies her but is too scared to declare it. So Carabella sends her trusted servant Cenerentola dressed up as herself to shake things up a little. But in typical commedia-style things never go according plan...

Der reiche Pantalone schickt seinen Diener Arlecchino zum Alchemist Malvolio. Er hat einen Liebestrank gebraut: Wer davon trinkt, verliebt sich in die erste Person, die er sieht. Carabella, Pantalones Tochter, ist in Benvoglio verliebt, Benvoglio auch in sie, aber er traut sich nicht, es ihr zu zeigen. Carabellas Dienerin Cenerentola verkleidet sich als ihre Herrin und macht alles komplizierter.
